I've heard of the coolant control ECU to go faulty and give this problem, these will be on AC cars only

Yep - exactly what mine was doing - among other daft things!

Replaced the Coolant Control Module and all is well again.

Have a look on ebay - there used to be loads of them on there but now I can only find one:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-coolant-control-module-mk4-98-04-TR_W0QQitemZ330338582355QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Cars Parts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4ce9b6bf53&_tr ksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1|66%3A2|39%3A1|2 40%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

or use breakersyard.com - used them a few times and never had any problems.

You need to find out the specific model tag you have on yours though - mine was WC and the unit itself was black. Unfortunately the bloody thing is tucked away under the passenger front wing. You can just about get to from underneath once some bits of trim have been removed to actually replace it, but I'm not sure whether you'll be able to see the info you need first though - in which case the bumper needs to come off!

    Good luck!

... indicators do not give you right of way!!!
