    Wondering if anyone can help?!!

Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone could help me!! I have just bought an astra 1.8 SRI (02), was going fine for a week or so now has been cutting out, over revving, not starting and the alarm has been sounding when driving Mad or what?! Have just taken it to a vauxhall dealer and they have said it is to do with the wiring and that i need a driver control unit which is gonna cost over £800, has anyone heard of a driver control unit coz i have got 2 mechanic friends who havnt heard of it. Any information would be greatly appreciated Thanks Caryl

Hi there, never heard of that before?! I'm sure someone could shed some light on it? Or do a search in the mk4 electrical section or n/a engine section? May throw up some ideas? Welcome to AOC by the way

They don't mean the ECU do they? The price suggests something like that! Worth getting another opinion before you spend £800 on a part as dealers do just tend to replace stuff until its fixed, so it might even cost a load more if that isn't it!

first port of call would be cleaning the throttle body - it could very well be knackered but you should at least clean it first - details in how-to section

can of carb cleaner is only £3 or so from a local car shop

the alarm will more than likely just be the back up batteries in the powersounder are dying and the chirps/siren u hear is a warning telling you so.
A replacement powersounder costs about £55 from Vxl specialists Autovaux and is cheaper than main dealers etc

Again, we have a guide on replacing this as its a very common problem (more of a routine service item than a problem) and click on the how-to section for this and the above TB issue.

The TB cleaning should only take half hour tops so definitely worth trying this before chucking money in the dealers direction .

Have you got any warning lights at all on the dash?

You could interrogate the ECU to see if theres any fault codes stored regardless if the management light is on or off.

Details on this can be found here (its piss easy to do - just a lengthy post so even the densest of owners can take it in lol) : http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...78&postcount=2

Good luck and keep us posted

Hey thanks for your help! turns out it was the ecu so got a second hand one and had it reprogrammed in the vauxhall garage.

Got it back from the garage on monday, it was running fine until today...well i suppose not just today...the whole time ive had the car (6 weeks) it seems to over rev and rev itself -i used to notice it after i had stopped.

Then today i was in a lot of traffic and it was revving itself when i stopped and would cut out if i didnt put my foot on the accelerator. The engine management/electric light or whatver its called (one with the spanner) came on. However its now gone off.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? i hope it is something simple this time! grrrr i just start to enjoy the astra then it breaks again! lol.
