lost water from 55 reg 1.7 cdti any idea of damage

Can anyone suggest what damage may have been caused by overheating ? I bought myself a nice 55 reg Astra 1.7cdti and only found out on driving it the 200 mile journey home that these cars are not fitted with a low water level light, the level was correct when I set off but had been leaking all the way back through a pinsized hole in a small hose. The car had seemed fine, but stalled when I slowed for a roundabout and when I checked under the bonnet was obviously very hot and steaming from the bottom left rear of the engine which is strangely nowhere near the damaged hose. Since then the engine seems to have a rumble low down and I can only describe the power output as more fluffy. I'm disgusted that Vauxhall dont fit a warning light, I understand the hoses fail often so thought somone might have done a repair or two. Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the Club,

How far were you away from home?

    Did you drive it?

But don't you get a "coolant level" warning on the dash display?

Taking it back isnt an option unfortunately Sparky.

Thanks for the welcome Dave, I'd driven 200 miles and was nearly home when it stalled, I topped it up with hot water after it had cooled down a bit and have been driving it since replacing the hose.

There wasn't a coolant level warning , dunno if mines a bit basic (Club CDTI) but pressing "settings and BC" brings up "NO FUNCTION" I noticed someone else was asking if a 3 line display could be fitted but I dont think it was answered.

I'm thinking maybe there is a leak in the head gasket or or slight crack in the head as the system seems to be over pressurising ,altering the level and pushing a bit of water passed the expansion tank cap. Think i'll try replacing the cap first tho'.

    Hi ya,

try putting some K-Seal in, it's Radiator/Headgasket Sealant which might just work.
