Bloody air conditioning - anyone got £500 they can lend?

Had my car in today after Kwik Fit said last year they couldn't re-gas due to a leak on the system. No clue as to where.

Took it to a specialist today who happens to be the chap i bought it from.

All this was done by my mum & dad whilst i was at work. I get a text saying £500

    I reply saying sod that!

Something to do with the "evaporator". It's apparently located behind the dash & they'd have to take the dash out to deal with it. I asked my mum (she spoke to the chap) if that's parts, labour or what & she said she was told the part alone can cost upwards of £500.

I know some of you have tales of "empty your bank account" turning into "buy me a drink & it'll be reet" as far as money & cost of a fix goes.

What do you make of this figure linked to this part? Can anyone put me on a cheaper path or is it a case with this, of pay up or make do?

EDIT:2 listings on eBay i just found. MASSIVE price difference makes me wonder if these possibly aren't the parts i'm in need of. I expected to find it cheaper on eBay but not £400 cheaper. Would this be it or not?

    LISTING 1: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Astra-1998-Air-Con-Evaporator-Radiator-Genuine_W0QQitemZ150303973804QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item22fed0a1a c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A2108|66%3A2| 65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

    LISTING 2: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Astra-98-Air-Con-Evaporator-Radiator-New_W0QQitemZ150301709490QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item22feae14b2&_t rksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A2108|66%3A2|65%3 A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

EDIT x2: Spoke to the mother about the above & she's now changing her tune

She doesn't seem to know whether the part was around this (£100) price and labour bumps it to £500+ or whether the part can cost £500 or what. When i ask more Qs for a clearer picture, she gets more confusing. I can't complain though - it'd have to have taken a days hol just to take the car to the garage myself.

She did say the garage told her i'd have had to have taken it elsewhere for the total fix.

This was the most confusing part, as they're supposedly air con specialists as well as your typical garage. (to me) god knows why they couldn't do the job 100% if i was willing to pay.

Listing 1 is the front (outside) air con radiator.
Listing 2 is the internal radiator.
But as stated in the ebay ad, there are several versions, so make sure it's the one you need.

From what my mother says the fella told her (as mentioned, this seemed to change with every question i asked trying to get more info) i think the quote of £500 included the entire fix.

With that said though, if i'd have to send the car off to get something done that this guy "couldn't" do then i dunno how he could quote me £500 like that.

I'm at a loss. All i know is he said that the dash would have to come out - this is one thing she hasn't changed her mind on , so i know it's not going to be cheap.

I remember when my Escort needed to have its dash out for the heater gubbins i was looking at £300+ so i said no thanks.

The next car will most deffinately have WORKING air con

LoL. Unfortunately it's what i'm going to have to do.

The worst thing i did was have air con on the last car. now i've found out what it's like, it's a handy luxury to have.

turn the cold blowers on now and all it does is circulate warm air

Oh well, things could be worse i guess

taking the dash out a refitting its a piece of cake it just takes a while, ask him how much if you do that yourself. the car can still be driven with no dash you just have to secure the speedo and bits so they don't move out of sight/get in the way.

ask him what he has to send it off for? swapping parts you can do yourself, don't think anything would need re-programming, and he should be able to re-gas it himself. can't think of any other reason it would have to be sent off

I'd get a second opinion from a different garage first to be honest. I got a new aircon rad fitted last year - Vauxhall wanted about £200 for the rad alone, yet the garage I use got a 3rd party pattern rad for about £100 and fitted it and refilled the gas for another £100 or so.

I emailed the chap in the eBay link & he got back at me with the part i need. He told me to check in with Vaux to make 100% sure it's the part i need. Anyway £169 + £10 postage the eBay fella said.

I may go for a 2nd opinion i dunno. The £500 quote just had me thinking that i really can't be arsed. Twas a bit of a blow (no pun) for something that's a luxury & not a necessity. I'll have to have a think about it.

Taking the time aspect out of the equation, as i'd expect it'd take some time anyway, how easy/difficult is taking the dash out? Are there any akward fiddly bits, or is it just a case of a few screws here & there, pull parts out bit-by-bit & jobs a gudgeon - nothing fiddly, but simply just time consuming?

It'd make a difference to my weighing it up is why i ask
