    Question cambelt replacement problem

    Hi,

I am new to the site and to owning a vauxhall let alone an astra.
    Mine is a MK3 1.6 16v estate.
And the curious problem i have is that i've decided to replace the cambelt - as i dont know the age of the one that was in the car when i got it.
Curious when i removed the old belt i noticed that the timing mark on the inlet cam sprocket moved down about two teeth when the belt came off.
I've fitted a new belt but to do so i've had to turn the cam back to align the timing marks.
when i started the car - its now started to make a metallic rubbing noise and i can't tell where it's coming from but it sounds as though its from the waterpump pulley or lower and not from the cylinder head area.

Has anyone any idea's on either issue.

did you align the crankshaft properly aswell? the waterpump doesn't need aligning. re-check the timing marks, you might have put the belt on one tooth out.

It's normal for cams to move sometimes, as tension from the valve springs is still acting on some lobes, so long as timed right when when belt is tensioned is what matters.
It might be the cover over the belt needs a tie wrap or two as they can warp badly, every 8 valve certainly I've done had to use tie wraps to pull cover off the belt to stop rubbing maybe same with 16V ?

Sounds like you haven't clipped the lower cambelt cover in correctly and it is rubbing on the crankshaft drive pulley for the poly vee belt.
