If it's rear brakes you are having a problem with, take off the drums and see if there is a lip on the outside of the drum, if so get a grinder, grind off the lip on the drum, clean the shoes withsome emmery paper and see if that makes a difference.

The lip on the outside won't cause them too stick on.
Make sure there is a chamfer on each leading edge, that they are not totally covered in brake dust and that ther eis coppaslip on the areas where they rub on the backplates, and the return springs are all on ok.

What they said, unless it's the handbrake and not the footbrake.

On mine, the handbrake operating levers that are riveted to the shoes had seized up. I freed them off a couple of times but had to give up and get new shoes eventually.

Having said that, mine could be unusual. It's S reg and was registered a year after it was built. It seems to have spent that year in a field going by the rusty bits everywhere.

Don't take any notice of the sig, I've got a Mk3 too.

Got a friend whos just bought a P reg Astra , theres a noise from the front end ,brakes or something , but theres also a light on the dash , she says its a EML thats constantly on . There doesnt appear to be a plug in front of the handbrake for a diognostic tool . Does this older model have a diognostic plug ? or even a ECU ? thanks

That's because the plug sits on the fuse board.
