Question LMF, Recon Turbo's? & Making Turbo's Last??

I have abit of a mere with the vxr turbo fitted to my Z20Let over the past few days...

My standard Turbo went when i bought the car last April, so i went LMF and ordered a VXR Turbo and bits and bobs... fitted it 2 weeks later, and it lasted up untill last week... 1 year.

Started off by hearing a sort of sound that sounded like a boost leak, then a wurring sound on start up... then a wurring and screeching sound whilst spooling and absolutly no boost... turbo dead.

Now, do LMF sell Recon'd units or are they brand new? i was under the presumption that they were brand new?

If there new, then whats the most probable reason for it going within a year?

i used to let it warm up and down, wasnt hammering it everywhere at all...

so, anyway, getting a new one fitted early next week... and i want to know the best way to make it last a fair few years before changing it again? how to give it a long happy boosting life???

cheers for any help or input, chris (turbo novice)

p.s. VXR Turbo and actuator on a Z20LET Coupe, leaving the actuator at the position it came with... should it be put to the same position as standard z20let's?

vxr actuator is set at 14psi standard, so higher tha zlet, some ppl wind down some dont, mine is still set as standard as it wont use any more boost than ecu asks for, so if ecu asks for 8psi, it will only get 8psi, doesnt matter if its set at 14psi.
have heard u can damaged turbo this way, but i havent seen it as yet

yeh read on here last year, some people say wind it back, some say dont bother... i didnt bother beacuse of warrenty... which ran out like 4 weeks a go... typical... shouldnt harm the turbo by winding it down though, right?

Would of sent the old unit to turbo dynamics and get them to rebuild it with stronger seals and thurst bearing work out cheaper tahn buying a new vxr one and you would be getting 2 yrs warranty and a better turbo

The original is always .... the worst.
I reckon that you either get some aftermarket turbo (GT28 series for ex.), or take your for rebuild with stronger parts like DCA says
The only way to be 100% certain that work has been done properly is to do it yourself.

They just arn't very good turbos unfortunately

I don't believe all this business about winding down the actuator as thats what its set to when installed on VXRs
