    respray centre console, tips?

    hi

im planning on respraying my GSi centre consol. At the moment its the grey colour from the top near the windscreen, all the way down to where the handbrake is. I want to paint it white from near the windscreen (above clock etc) down to above and level with the ash tray. Then ash tray back to below the actual handbrake black. Not 100% sure it will look good, what you think?

Anyway, has any one got any tips to do this. I heard that you should use car paint and not plastic paint. Avoid making it gloss - go with matt to avoid windscreen reflextion. Anything else?

I do this as a service, its not the easiest thing to do as can craze.

I normally charge £70 for full console top - under handbrake in whatever colour you want

there is a how to that I followed when I did mine, will give you a run down now. Get some rough wet n dry, 120 grit I started with, get EVERYTHING off it, right back to bare plastic, no texture whatsoever. Then work it again with 240 grit, then 600, until it's a uniform look and feel. Any imperfections you see at this stage will most likely be seen in the finished job, especially with white paint I would have thought. This can take a fair few hours and DONT RUSH IT.

I used halfords plastic primer (1.5 cans), vx velvet green paint (1.5 cans), and about 3/4 cans lacquer. You can lacquer it as much you want, I have and any reflection is only noticeable if you look for it. Make sure you give it plenty of time between products (i.e primer to paint, paint to lacquer) After priming, 2 hours is good to paint, and after painting, 6hours is good for lacquering. Make sure you wipe the console with white spirit and microfibre cloth between products as well to get rid of any dust and grease.

Only really light coats are required for each product at first, overdoing it will only result in runs if paint and cloudy bits in the lacquer. No disrepect to the guy who said he'd spray it for you, but this is definitely one car part that can be done with rattle cans and leave a good job. Mine is perfectly flat with no runs or anything, and that was the first thing (of many) I painted. Any questions just ask mate
