Took my MK4 DTI to a main dealer, OMG Help.

Took my car to a main dealer for recall front axle work. Paid to have a health check done(£50) aswell.

The health check came back with this:

    - Coolant leak = £186.24
    - Rear discs corroded + pads worn to excess = 221.95
    - Front discs corroded = 219.08
    - Rear exhaust corroded = 147.48
    - Inner roll bar bearings noisey = 192.07
    - washers and bonnet cable = £18.40

They said if I want it all done £1100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

    My response was .......... No.

A bloke I work with has been into his cars for a long time. He looked over the discs and brakes. He said the discs look no more worn than usual he said there was no major rivets or dents in them. He said the front pads are fine, and back do need replacing. So I bought some EBC greenstuff :-)

So what do I do about the other stuff? I didn't think there was anything wrong with my washers apart from sometimes they work and sometimes they dont lol. So there is obviously some sort of problem.

What about the the coolant leak? Can I do that myself. I do have a haynes manual.

As for the roll bar bushes being noisey? What is that suppose to mean?

    Any help much appreciated!

I would never use a main dealer they are rapists. Feeling like going back in there with a large object. £80 a hour labour.

Good grief, what a story. I'm sure you'll get some comments about this. I gave up on main dealers years ago. Just seems better to find a mechanic you can trust.

I wonder how they could put a price on fixing the coolant leak unless they knew exactly what was wrong. I'm sure there are things you could do yourself but do you have any idea where it is leaking? Like, is it the waterpump or... ?

What did your mate say about the exhaust - is it rusting out? Might have to bring it into one of those exhaust/muffler shops.

What did your mate say about the noisey "inner roll bar bearings" or bushes?

Well really for the exhaust he said leave it till it starts blowing, he said the majority of exhausts in the UK look corroded due to the rust!

He didnt have time to look at the other things.

I have no idea where to identify the coolant leak, by coolant I assume they mean water where the to the wiper washers?

Yeah I was thinking that things do appear to corrode more in the UK - guess just leave the exhaust until it blows a hole and starts sounding like a tank.

Surely they mean engine coolant leak - the antifreeze mixture (red or green coloured stuff). Take a look at your manual for details, go check your coolant expansion tank for coolant level - and check it regularly - just don't want it to all leak away before fixing the problem.

Ask them to show you the proof of these problems? have you checked your coolant yourself?

I have looked at the coolant. It seems fine. I cant spot an obvious leak.
I'm going to take it to an independant garage I think.

It's a joke how main dealers think that can just rip you off.

I guess it is still possible that there is a slow coolant leak. Maybe they topped it up for you (?) and the level hasn't gone down enough to notice yet. Always good to check your coolant level regularly.

I wonder why they mentioned the bonnet cable - is there a problem there? Does it not work well, or is it frayed or worn or something? And I wonder what they meant by "washers". Hmmm...

Yes this is what I thought about the washers. By the bonnet cable I assume thing that holds it up? I looked at it. It seems fine. nothing obvious at all. I am going to go back in prentend I will have the work done if they prove to me where the problem is. maybe I should do some secret camera thing and upload the results.... that would be interesting :-)

Don't ever bother with main dealers. They rarely even take the wheels off on a service from what I've seen.
