alright i just got my astra, and i want to remove the standard stereo and put in a beat 550 stereo (picture above), the only problem is whether it will work with the steering wheel controls?! I spoke to the guys over at caraudiodirect and connects2, and they told me that the beat 550 does not support the stalk feature! Is there any way around this? Alternatively is there another headunit that is stalk compatible that has a 3inch monitor and aux feature?

    Reccomendations appreciated!

If they say it's not compatiable then you won;t be able to get steering wheel controls to work

The JVC KD-AVX20 might be your best option

Actually quite a significant amount of them will work with steering wheel controls.

Also is there a way around the fact that it does not support Steering wheel controls. Um shame on Connects2 they should bow there heads for giving you incorrect info. The even sell the device to allow you to retain your steering wheel controls. What is it, it is a part called Uni-IR (based on the same principle of something designed by me way back when (2001/2) and manufactered by a US company initially. As used with my system in my old astra G) and what it is is a device that learns the signals with the supplied remote that comes with the 550 and maps them to the correspoding steering wheel controls. The interface then works with your steering wheel controls to provide a infra red signal to your 550. Hey presto steering wheel controls working with the 550.

Uni-IR is the parts name. Give Car electronics (0116 2449844) a call and Speak to Lee he will order one for you. It is a new part and not in there current brochure but it is on there April or May news section.

    My new headunit

    Features & Benefits:
    • DVD CD radio with 3.5" LCD widescreen
    • DVD / MP3 / WMA / CD / CD-R / CD-RW / JPEG compatible
    • Front AUX input for MP3 player or iPod
    • Rear USB port
    • SD card slot (reads up to 1GB)
    • 4 x 50 Watts max power output
    • Full detachable panel
    • RDS radio
    • AV output for additional monitor
    • Video input for rear view camera
    • 5 channels line-out: front, rear and subwoofer
    • ISO connector

In the end, I opted for the Ripspeed DVD733B, primarily because it had an aux feauture for Ipod connection and the beat 550 did not, plus it had more watts than the beat and looked better, the drawback of this headunit, is that more than one function cannot be used at the same time, e.g. you cant view pictures on memory card and use the AV/Aux input at the same time, which is a shame as when you are using the AV/Aux input you only see a bright blue blank screen! Lol i don't know whether thats a good enough reason to change my headunit again! I brought this headunit for 150 including fitting from SHATFORDS (halfords), the ***** who fitted broke my original headunit! All in all it is a nice headunit, but the blue blank screen thing can get annoying!
