    ARE ecus interchangable??

as the title says im just wondering if there interchangable because basically the ECU out of my 1.8 sri x reg is gone and i believe the engine is the x18xe1 and ive done abit anf research and it comes up as that engine have to types of ecu. the siemens simtec 70 and 71, both ECUs are completely different shapes, if you follow this link and look at the 1.8 ecus http://carclinicmagazine.com/vauxhal..._failures.html i have the one on the left which need replacing and i bought the one on the right today however the codes dont match on the ECU so i didnt bother to have it fitted but now im thinking whether it may fit, any ideas people??

the simtec 70 was on the earlier x18xe1 and the simtec 71 was on the later z18xe, so no they are not interchangeable.

unless you buy a new/blank ecu and have it programmed to your car it will not work. for an ecu off a scrap car to work you need the immobiliser ring & the keys aswell

    yes.
you can confirm the engine code by looking on the cylinder block, at the front passenger side where it joins the gearbox.

either return or sell the simtec 71 and get yourself a simtec 70 with transponder & key

my ecu which need replacing as these numbers on it:
    09158670
    50100104
    5wk9153
    0090111385
so does this mean i need to find an ecu with exactley the same numbers, or do they vary??

duno mate, probably not. aslong as you get the ecu transponder and key from an astra with an x18xe1 you should be fine.

What is wrong with your old one as you could probably get this fixed for about £250 with a 2 year warranty, you should try contacting www.ecu-testing.com.
