    Coupe Advice Please?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a 2.2 coupe and wanted to know if there is anything I should be particularly looking at in terms of common problems/areas? (i'm looking for one with around 60k)
Also what would you say is the average running costs of these cars?

    Thanks!

First thing I would recommend is typing '2.2' into the search function on here. There are loads of myths about the timing chains on these. I would suggest if its been well maintained then it shouldnt be a problem.

However, I notice that you mention the words 'running costs'.

The 1.8 develops 123bhp but has the close ratio gearbox so does 0-60 in 8.5 seconds.
The 2.2 develops 147bhp but does not have the close ratio gearbox and does 0-60 in 8.2 seconds.

What type of driving will you be doing most?

    Hi chaps,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's much apprieciated.

Yes, I did consider the 1.8 but I've heard that the fuel consumption is not a lot better than the 2.2, so the 2.2 is more attractive as it has the additional performance but with only marginally worse economy. Would this be a fair assessment?

In terms of what the car will be used for, my husband has an Evo which tends to be used at weekends/trackdays so the Coupe will be for general day to day stuff and commuting to work (motorway). I presently have a Peugeot 306 1.9DTurbo which is a bit sluggish so I'm looking for something a bit faster, but it will still be doing a round trip of about 50 miles a day each day for work. So I guess I need a cruiser which can be quick when you want it to.

Hence I reckon the 2.2 fits the bill better than the 1.8? (Don't want a turbo as it's a much higher group for insurance, so that's 100% ruled out for me.)

    Cheers again.

To be honest, my 1.8 Coupe has pretty average economy, and I'm an economical driver. My 2.0 Vectra is far better there, as it has taller gearing.

At 50 miles a day - have you considered a newer Astra sporthatch with the 1.7cdti? Its not too slow with 100 bhp. Alternatively, you could have the 1.9cdti 8v 120, or a 16v 150 bhp. Not sure on insurance goupes though - but someone on here will know.

I imagine these will be quicker than the 306DTurbo and will give better economy than the 2.2 for sure.

i get around 400 miles to a tank easy on my 1.8 and with town use and just jollying about on B roads
im not a 'granny' driver either but then again im no street racer

i'll have a little play at the traffic lights with ppl, but its no giant killer

i've been driving it a bit harder lately and honestly can't much (if any) difference in fuel usage

when its cold i change up at 2 - 2.5k
    when its warm 3.5 - 4k
then any upto .5k before the redline for when i fancy
