What car to get for this budget....

the g/f is after replacing her 1998 VW Polo 1.4L at some point. At the moment she's eyeing up Corsa's but also likes Puma's too.

the budget would probably be around the 2k marker, give or take a couple hundred. If her Polo isn't dead at this point (just a what if, as it actually runs ok currently) then there'll be whatever she gets for that (probably somewhere under £700) as well as.

Don't suggest anything "old school with a lot of 'character'" either. she'll be wanting something newish. Newer than her current car anyhow.

MPG would have to be fair (let's say 40mpg+)
She's prefer it to be no slower than her Polo & hopefully a bit nippier
Nothing group 20 on the insurance!! (in other words, nothing too high)
    Reliability is a KEY point
Longevity - she doesn't want it falling apart with the rust as she's beginning to dislike her Polo as it's a bit scattered with the rust.

    Any suggestions?

    Any suggestions?
Spend more on a better car???

Any car you buy for £700 isn't going to be the best out there, and probably won't last very long.
    Gaz

    No longer owns an Astra

Bye bye VXR Castle Combe Edition - because it's done more laps of Castle Combe than most Bergs have of the Ring

I would say a mk4 1.8 or 2.0 sri. You know the potential and they are reliable IMO.

I had a zlet and although it had problems, it never failed to start and run! Also had a 2.2 and never a days bother with it at all!

the thing that gets me is, she reckons up the Astra would be "too big" for her, yet she likes the Golf & wouldn't mind an A3 (this is after she moaned it looked like a "stupid estate car") Whereas the measurements are basically the same. In fact, isn't the MK4 Golf a bit bigger than the Astra? I made a thread a while ago & couldn't believe it as it didn't look it. Someone put them side by side & measured it lol.

As for reliability, before i got the Astra, i spoke to many people who'd had them & all bar 1 said they were reliable.
From Sept until now my Astra has been fine.

2.0 Astra doesn't quite fit in with the comment regarding the insurance though does it really. Isn't it like mid teens or something? I dunno. Even if it's not, it certainly doesn't fit in with the comment regarding MPG as my 1.8 gts about 35 tops unless i'm motorway driving.

Mate, i never said anything about her budget being £700

I said she'd probably get about £700 tops if she sold her Polo

Her budget would be in the £2k region (give or take a couple hundred & then if it gets sold, add on whatever is got from the Polo sale).

Spending 10k on a quality car is out of the question.
Getting a low 30s MPG car is out of the question
anything stupid high on insurance is out of the question

    How about a Clio?

I know some of them go quite cheap now, (The bubble shape) and from what iv seen from my friends one there fairly reliable. 1.5dci does in excess of 50 mpg too!
