I bought a 2.2 - Is vauxhall service worth it

    Hi All,

I just purchased a very nice Y plate Astra SRI 2.2 Irmscher with 80k from new and only 2 owners.

Its time for a service and I don't know whether to take it to Vauxhall......but as the car was fairly cheap I don't want to pay a fortune on service when I could get mechanic friend to do it.....but i guess I should keep up the FVSH (7 stamps). Like £150-£200 quid max on a service....

Also what is the best engine oil to use....Vauxhall recommend 5w30 but I hear using better oil like 0w40 is essential to ensure my timing chain doesn't snap in the future.

Any advise is most welcome.....silly me thought timing chain that's good news....but now I think maybe I should have gone with the 2.0.

Finally is the only way to turn off the service indictaor on dash to go to a vauxhall dealer.

    Cheers Stu

You can turn the Service indicator off wih cheapo tools and i think there is another way!

And depends if you want to change it and keep up the FVSH at the end of the day!

and oil wise, everyone will say different, if VX use 5w-30 then thats probs okies, i know of people who use 10w-40 in theres!
And Welcome to the Club, pics a must

oh and if u use 0w-40 your need to change it alot more often as its like water! which is why most ppl dont use it!!

If the engine has had the timing chain mod then it should be fine. Far better than the 1.8/2.0 engines IMO.

I use vauxhall 10-40 oil and that seems fine.

Cheers guys - Think I will guy VX a call for a service quote in the morning.

As it don't say in the history that the timing chain has been modded - probably best I get that checked at the same time.

    Thx!

when u say service indicator do u mean the "INSP" in the mileage readout?

If so then press and hold the trip reset button - insert key and turn to 2nd click - keeping button pressed - hold for a few further seconds, INSP will change to " - - - - - " flash for a few times then release button - INSP will be long gone - never to return for another 10/15k or whenever the preset interval is

stick with 10w40 is my advice and grab a full service kit from an independent vauxhall specialist via ebay or autovaux and the likes

do it yourself and save some wedge - no point paying for a stamp unless u plan on selling it and are really bothered about it!

    my opinion of course!!

definitely check for timing chain mod tho

    Thats great mate thanks!!!

I think I will buy service kit now I know how to turn off the service!! I can certainly do oil and filter changes myself.....but after that I am stuffed

Do you happen to know how much VX charge to perform check on timing chain?

and/or mod the timing chain (i think its the oil squirting nozzle....)

As it has full VX history I am sure its been done but guess I should get it checked out.

    Cheers

Sorry last question.....and I know this is probably in my owner manual somewhere.

For an oil change is it the usual 5 L required?

Full vx service means nowt. At the end of the day it just means more money was spent on a service which was probably done by a 17 year old trainee on apprentice wages. Whenever I do work on my car I know it's done properly. I can't say that for any garage. Things like a service can be done easily if you are willing to read up, hunt for parts and get your hands dirty!! The money you save from not paying over priced garages will easily make up the extra you could earn from the "FVSH" when selling. Infact, I don't think you ever make the money back.

I think it's around 4.5 litres. But buy 5 so you can have some spare to top it up with.
