    Exclamation Poorly Gearbox :(

Ok, a few weeks ago i was outside McD's and noticed a rattling coming from the engine bay, after snooping around in the car park and a few funny looks later i realised it was the gearbox, and after a run up to newcastle this weekend it's gotten a lot worse!

it sounds like a metallic rattling that seams to quiet down when i move off but still sounds bad

just wondering if anyone could help as i haven't got a clue.... i dont even know how to check the gearbox oil!!

*EDIT* just done the pedal test, i'm getting codes : 1612 and 1613

    what engine have you got?
    how old is the car?
what recent work have you had done?
does it do it in only one gear?
does it do it in neutral?
does the sound increase with revs?
how does the clutch pedal feel?
do you notice anything different when engaging the clutch?
you said it quietens down when setting off, does the noise get quieter or does the engine drown it out?

check theres no loose bits anywhere outside the gearbox that could be rattling against it.
you can't check the gearbox oil without draining it. To change the gearbox oil undo the inspection plate underneath, let the oil drain out, refit the plate, remove the oil level plug beside the passenger driveshaft, remove the reverse light switch from the top(this is where the new oil goes in), fill the new oil till it drains out of the oil level plug, refit the oil level plug and reverse light switch.

changing the oil might not fix it but its the cheapest thing to try first.

The sound could be the thrust bearing on the clutch, check the car in with your local garage

    engine is a x18xe
    the car is a 52 (2003)
only had a K&N filter and de-restricted the airbox 2 months ago
gearbox feels a bit notchy but has since i got it in december, the ball on on the gearstick (below the gaitor) has play so this maybe has something to do with the notchyness
it rattles through all gears but seams to lessen when i disengage the clutch
clutch pedal feels fine, like it always has
the engine may be drowning it out but it's hard to tell, i'll have a check when i have time

i had a clutch bearing go on my old astra mk3 1.4 with the f11(?) gearbox and all the symptoms are totally different, although i'll check this and a few other things when i have time

i'll try changing the oil first, then i can check for any metallics in the oil
