Thinking of trading my Astra for this...

As many of you know, I have been thinking of getting a small, economical 4x4 with a centre diff lock for a while now and I think I have finally settled on the car below:

My Astra is now exactly 10 years old and worth less than £800. Before the next MOT, I will need to replace the exhaust, brake discs and pads, get new tyres all round, do a full service and a few other bits and bobs need sorting just to pass it for another year.

It's a shame because I love the Astra and it drives perfectly well, but it is now worth more to me as scrap with the new government scheme, plus there are a few niggles as expected for the age and things that I don't like, for example it's only 3 door and has no ABS etc.

Anyone else in a similar situation to me? And if so, what are you planning to get?

Look into the cash for scrape thing. Its not as hot as it sounds. Ie you get the cash off the list price. I bet if you went in with a good haggleing head you could get near the same price anyway

I know what you mean by brave choice! However Daihatsu is owned by Toyota, so I'm effectively buying an unbadged and redesigned reliable Rav4, except it isn't a soft roader as it has been designed more for off road use (like the Suzuki Jimny, although not as crude and utilitarian)

I'm not planning to sell it so depreciation isn't really an issue, especially if I get a good deal (I'm not expecting to pay more than £10,000). I usually buy my cars brand new or ex demonstrator and keep them 10-15 years until they start causing me major issues and are better off being scrapped.

My parents are still going around in a 1989 Cavalier, but they are also planning to change now due to the £2000 off newer cars.

I never fully understand the concept of selling your car for a brand new one because it needs some work done on it. Say it needs £1k of work done to it, the new car will lose far more than that in the first year anyway, so it's not really saving you money.

Also, this government scheme wont save a penny when buying new.
