    Brown "Mayo" under oil cap

Did all the simple car checks today, came to the oil, topped it up a little bit and noticed a thick brown sludge.

I've googled it and It seems it can be water in the oil from driving like a granny or short journeys (I do a fair few of them)

    Head gasket

    or a bust thermostat?

Any other checks I can run to make sure my heads not about to blow. Not had to top up oil in months and I've done a lot of miles, still plenty of coolant.

    Thanks alot!

    is it a 1.6 8v?

if u do short journeys as u say u do then its perfectly normal

providing theres no oil/water contamination, loss of water etc then nowt to worry about - does the heater work, engine heat up, fan kick in at 90 etc?

best thing to do is try to give it a good run at least once a week - ie 40mins+ to burn off all the condensation

in the meantime whip off the rocker cover and scoop out all the mayo - id advise doing an oil n filter change too and then treating it to a good run once a week (if u can etc)

remove the crankcase breather pipes and clean these out too - no doubt they'll be chocca too

no its not - by his own admission he does short journeys, also no oil probs or coolant loss!!! - lets wait for more car details ie engine etc before we jump on the HGF bandwagon!

    Yes it is 8v 1.6

Heater works grande, fan kicks in fine.

Stat never tends to go above 90.

Right, looks like I got me a weekend project, thanks a lot

    EDIT:
Also, in fact, cars been driven very rarely this month, and never more than maybe 5 miles. been away a lot of this month.
