I took the smart in for some repairs to Mercedes today and was offered the usual 1.0 Corsa courtesy car or I could pay a tenner and get an insignia. I thought it would be a good opportunity to try one out, not having been in one yet.
My first impressions is that it's light years ahead of the old Vectra C - Vauxhall have actually put a bit of thought into the design of this car rather than chucking out another boring rep-mobile. It feels very solid and stable and although I didn't like the looks of them at first they do look quite 'chunky' and fairly upmarket for a mainstream brand. The interior is a very nice place to be with a nice amount of toys. While the build quality isn't really up there with the Germans imo, it's definitely a step forward and nicely designed.
The one downside on the one I had was the engine, the 1.8 simply doesn't have the poke to move a car of that size/weight with any urgency. Even next to my little 1.6 Astra the Insignia felt unresponsive and generally sluggish.
That aside, with a decent engine (more than likely the CDTi) it would definitely tempt me over other similar cars. The new VXR version is going to be a belter I reckon.
