    hey,

my work busted me for using facebook pretty much all day, i dont have any work to do - work on a very quiet reception desk... apparently IT have a system where they can see how many hits you make to websites such as facebook and stuff like that... is this true that they can see this info??? and locate it to a particular user?!?! and is this site considered a social networking site (ie will i get busted again for using this?!)

You''l find that most companies don't monitor all users' internet traffic all the time, but they will be looking for hits on specific websites (depends how IT savvy the company are) - facebook and the like are usually banned cos they're teeming with viruses, worms and the like.

Now they've caught you once, they'll almost certainly be watching you.

    1) Yes, it is possible to monitor the sites each individual uses, how often etc etc - the level of detail they can get depends entirely on your work computer network and how their Internet connection is firewalled/proxied
    2) Unless they have made you sign a Computer Acceptable Use Policy/Internet Use Policy and/or told you they are monitoring your activity, they may be in the wrong

As Nry said, but you may have signed the AUP inadvertently when you joined the company and agreed to their policies.

Im an IT Manager and can see what everyone does / looks at etc. There's loads of legalities about how they can and cannot monitor you. At my place you accept the be bound by the AUP when you logon, if you dont accept, you can't logon. - Simples!!

However if you left it open, then there's a chance they aren't monitoring you. - how big's the company? Generally, larger firms will monitor more than smaller ones.

Proxy's are easily recognisable in a log - most logging tools i've used will resolve dns, so it'll say "megaproxy.com" or whatever.

Plus if a user has spent 5 hours on an unresolved IP address, its gonna ask some questions!

Proxy's are strictly forbidden in my policies, and ignorance is never an excuse. No one accidently stumbles onto a proxy site and starts browsing inside it.

Ditto Stephen. Use of a proxy site or even trying to find one is a break of our AUP rules - our network monitoring software even picks up users trying to find the sites even if they don't find or use them. We have an auto-updated web filter list for proxy sites anyhow, so few get to use them once found anyhow.
