    ripped off = YES

are you really that bothered about a service stamp? if so then thats the price at a main dealer

personally i think ur mad even considering it

parts could be had very cheaply - even cheaper if u join AOC as paid member and take advantage of trade club discount. even if u dont, then you could always source the parts independently and have a good trusted independent garage fit them.

if u use vxl parts and have them fitted at a vat registered garage then the parts are covered by Vxls 12 month warranty should anything go wrong.

You could probably save a good £300+ if u did it the above way

i got all my 4yr service parts for about £65 from VX then paid my local garage £60 to fit them and stamp my book.

pads are about £25-40 depending on if its fronts/back, 280mm/308mm etc
and the cambelt (any reason for it being done early, isnt it the same as the astra 10yr/100k?) *anyway the kit is prolly no more than £50*

id be looking to pay about £350-£400 including MOT and stamp.

the dealer probs only quoted for a timing belt kit - some just even quote for the belt on its own

we always advise u get the water pump changed at the same time (some ppl - no names mentioned ) disagree with this, but its false economy not changing it whilst the belt is off.

timing belt kit (belt, rollers, tensioners etc) circa £70
    water pump £30
    service kit £60
oil £8 on trade club - £18 retail
    front & rear pads - £40
    MOT - £40

personally id just get a local garage to fit the timing belt etc - 2 hrs labour at about £40/hr and you fit the rest of the gear ur self

if ur not confident then id have said 3hours labour would be more than adequate

My opinion is that all these things just start to add up. On their own they don;t seem expensive but together it feels like they are just trying to pull your trousers down. You just have to look at the prices you quoted below and mentioned by someone else (sorry Marti) that there isn't a great deal of difference

You have to remember that on a service your getting more than just items changed, your having the car checked over for other possible problems that may come up

    Brakes do seem expensive though

its mainly the brakes that have bumped the price up i agree

i believe in theory that a "service" does include the checks etc but from personal experience I would rather entrust a local garage whos reputation and livelihood is on the line rather than the cowboys at main dealers

just do some homework and get some more prices then make a decision

    good luck
