    Servicing costs

My Astra's nearly ready for its next service, which will be the first it's had since I got it.

When I take it for service it'll have 116500 miles on it (last service was done at 106500); it's a 2000 W plate 1.7 DTI estate.

Any ideas how much a service should cost, so I'll know if I'm being fleeced or not?

    Depends where you take it.

The hourly rate differs from dealer to dealer.

It's a choice between the local Vauxhall dealer and an independent garage down the road. Will give 'em a bell and check, but was just after rough ballpark costs so I get an idea of what's reasonable.

Bristol Street Motors, Chesterfield - although I've heard customers are less satisfied with them since they changed from being Blakes.

The indie is Chris Winspear, also in Chesterfield.

Service it yourself, if you don't know how read a book or ask someone to show you, then you'll see that service prices are a rip off when you do, full service from Kwik-Fit is about £149 for a 1.8 or do it youself for about less than £50 and then you know it had been done.

As a rough guide, a main dealer will be twice the price of an independant garage, but obviously a main dealer will only use genuine vxl parts, whereas an independant garage MIGHT use motor factor parts. A LOT of these parts are the same manufacturer so quality these days isn't always inferior.

An independant garage near me that uses only vxl parts (they are recently ex-main dealer mechanics so get trade discount) charges 90 for small service, or £180 for a large service.

The one thing a garage can do is stamp your service book, good for when the time comes to sell on. Up to you bud, its not always that hard to do DIY.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Those indie prices don't seem as scary as I thought, well over £200 quid wouldn't have surprised me.

Wouldn't mind doing it meself, as I service both my bikes (Harley and a Suzuki Bandit) meself but, daft as it may seem, I live on a busy road with no off-road parking and no flat (or anywhere near flat) ground, so it's probably a non-starter.

The indie I mentioned seem to have a good rep with a few folks where I work (and it's possible I might get a little bit of discount too), so I'll give them a shout I reckon.

As far as resale goes, I'm planning on keeping it for a good long time so it's maybe not that relevant, and I guess a stamp from a non-Vauxhall garage is better than no stamp at all.

Once again, many thanks for the advice.
