    Engine Management Light

I have an Astra 1.6 8v V reg. This is hard to explain so I'll do my best.

My Engine Management Light comes on now and again, sometimes when I'm doing about 50 and have to decelerate going down a bank or accelerate going up a bank or slowing down quite quickly. If the light is already on it will sometimes go off again if I go down a bank. Some days it doesn't come on at all. I now nearly always know when it will come on and where.

According to a mechanic the diagnostic check came up as no fault found as the light doesn't stay on. (Apparently it needs to be on all the time.)

Anyone have any ideas because this is driving me mad.

Had a similiar problem with mine, it was very intermittent, car was running great, bit heavy on the petrol thou, mate told me it could be several things as there are several sensors on the car, well i changed the air filter as there is an air sensor there, same problem, changed oxygen sensor which is in the exhaust, and hey presto, bit of luck i know but problem disappeared, try the cheapest first mate, let me know how you got on...hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I would go for the cheapest first but I don't know where to start.

I've been told by my mechanic that my engine management light comes on cos of a faulty egr valve, but its intermittent, and very random..... but will deal with it when its on all the time.

    er

    dont waste ur time!!!!

the reply earlier is more useful though

you'll probs find its down to a faulty EGR valve

try the DIY method to flash the fault codes as u may still be able to get one irrespective if a plug in reader doesnt

for your early mk4 it'll be the paperclip method - details here:

(ignore the other references in this post as its lifted directly from another thread)

at the end of the day though you'd be best off cleaning your EGR valve with some carb cleaner - also clean the throttle body and idle control valve whilst ur at it - disconnect the battery whilst ur at it to reset any fault codes that may be stored

tin of carb cleaner for about £3 from a local car shop, a clean rag and ur sorted

details can be found in the how-to section if ur unsure of whats involved

    any questions just shout

Thanks very much for the replies. I don't know a great deal about cars so your replies have been very helpful. I'll do what you recommend and let you know how I get on.
