Must be an air leak after the throttle body, if not you've damaged it or jammed it when cleaning.

What did you clean it with - if its carb cleaner it will rev its bollox off until the residue is burned off - go for a drive it will calm down.

The car more than likely adjusted itself overtime to suit the caked throttle body, now its nice and clean and more free flowing its still running as it was before

Take it for a gentle drive and it'll be fine

I've read about d/c the battery related to this so the car can "learn"

What's the deal with that? Does the battery have to be d/c to kick start some learning process or will it eventually "learn" over time?

Did you plug the ICV back in correctly on the throttle body, i think without this the car will rev quite high.

very much doubt he did as it doesnt have one

remember the 2.2 is a Z series engine therefore NO ICV!

Guess the only thing u can do is try all the suggestions above - well the sensible ones anyway - so try disc battery if u have stereo code - alternatively just remove 2 plugs on ECU for about ten mins, remove TB again and all associated ancillaries and check for vac leaks etc - check & double check all connections

It will be just burning off carb cleaner as said above. I did mine on Friday on my 2.2 and it revved high Friday and Saturday but has been perfect today.
