    Whining power steering

I have noticed for a while that my power steering seems to whine, is there a was to fix this without replacing....? It gets louder under load i.e. turning the wheel.

    Any advice appreciated.

Mine has done this also for about 5-6 years now without failing.

Is there a drain plug on the reservoir so the fluid could be changed ?

no drain plug - u just gotta remove the jubilee clip (or the factory fit clip - and replace with a jubilee one) let is "gush" out the hole (so to speak) and then refill with the correct GM fluid

Mark - seeing as its an early model - which pump have you got?

If its the early TRW Gen 1 type (ie the problematic one) it could be showing signs of wear - these units have a ribbed metallic body with a slim reservoir,,,,later Gen1 models have a smooth metal body and a small tubby reservoir - some models also had the Delphi unit fitted with an odd shaped angular res but these were mainly used on derv models.

if its the Gen1 then Id be keeping a close eye on it - has it ever failed on you Mark?

they are generally just replaced like for like but a Gen2 pump can be fitted to a Gen1 rack but i do believe a few mods to the bracketry holding the pump in place are required.... when i had my 8v in, the Gen1 pump failed on me as soon as i got the car - a refurbished unit was avail off the shelf but sadly no longer so (even tho they are still listed on the sellers ebay listing) - u could risk a 2nd hand unit but whos to say that one aint fecked.

some owners report that by replacing the wiring loom from pump to car it resolves the issue - mainly the earth wire. easy enough to do but pump still needs to come out - this in itself is straight forward and can squeeze out thru the top and not a subframe off job as mr haynes suggests!!!

Anyway,,,,,,apart from the usual checking/topping up/replacing of the fluid then theres not much else we can do bar replacing the units

alternatively the battery/alternator could be at fault or starting to show signs of wear....... this may be another avenue to consider

I always use the correct Vauxhall green stuff

1 litre bottle being part number 93160548 which is roughly £6 a bottle

you may be able to swing some trade discount by using ur TC number (altho its not on TC iirc u may still get some run of the mill trade discount)

Some ppl say that Dexron II/III is exactly the same (although usually red) but upto you if u prefer to use this

Yeah its been whining for soem time but always wondered if somehting was up.... From memory its the older type Marty and all fluid levels are fine to my knowledge.

May try and change the fluid and see if that has much effect
