    New Rear Exhaust Box

    Hi Chaps/Chapesses

Just bought a 2003 1.8 Coupe which needs a new rear exhaust box.

They're on ebay for £99 in stainless, and I see Peco do a range of styles in either 'acoustic' or 'loud'.

Was thinking of a Peco with twin tail pipes in 'acoustic' ?

What's the popular choice ?, as I suspect rusty rear boxes are quite common.

    Cheers

    Hi ya,

I think the popular choice would be Irmscher, but don't quote me because having one made up to your own specification in stainless is nicer and normally cheaper.

Peco are a good make and have been around for years, they were know for their loudness, but now that they do acoustic rear boxes that might be better on long runs.

Thanks for that, but looking at the Irmscher site I wasn't thinking of spending £300+ on a rear box.

There must be other cheaper alternatives which others on here have bought ?

Bye bye VXR Castle Combe Edition - because it's done more laps of Castle Combe than most Bergs have of the Ring

stainless steel is usually at least 50 quid more than mild steel. I got a peco acoustic box and it was still VERY loud
It would definitely go better with an engine in it

Ahhh that's more like it, that GT3 box seems ideal.

How 'loud' is it ?, as I don't mind a bit more 'snarl', but I don't want to be deafened or attract Mr Plod's attention.

    thanks

when it was just the centre section I had on it was reasonable. Louder than most but not stupid. With the inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and decat it was so loud it made low flying fighters jet seem quiet. The biggest downside was it was at its noisyest (sp) between 3000-4000 revs which is 70mph so on a motorway I had to drive at 60 or 90 to avoid getting deafened. On the upside it turned heads and it was impossible to fall asleep when driving
It would definitely go better with an engine in it

Pity, it sounds a bit too loud for what I want, although keeping me awake would be useful .

What are the other choices ?

i was on about my old peco one in the post above btw not the GT3 but the GT3s seem nigh on the same. The new piper one ive just put on is fairly quiet and has a really nice tone to it. You can pick them up for about 120 quid new in mild steel too...

Checked out a couple of Piper sites, inc Piper themselves, and it appears they don't make a box that fits the coupe or turbo ???

Has no one else bought something for a coupe that sounds good without blasting your ears off ?
