Question What are EGR Valves and Swirl Flaps?

Hey people. I like to think I know a fair bit about engines but I have absolutely no clue what EGR Valves and Swirl Flaps are. Can someone please explain. Cheers.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation - a valve that if the Eng Man system detects too high levels of fuel or fumes in the exhaust gas it goes back into the cylinders - round again to burn up the fuel and clean up the emissions. Swirl flap opens up a second induction tract as revs rise to help the engine breath at higher RPM. If they remain open at lower RPM you loose the swirl effect you get when induction gasses enter the chamber from one point. The swirl affect increases torque at lower RPM. (basically what the twin port system does on petrol) - I remember Suzuki introducing "TSCC" 20 years ago + - twin swirl combustion chambers. The way the gasses are routed into the chamber affects performance.

Not normally I have an 06 plate 1.9 CDTI and have had a new EGR fitted and just this week had a new inlet manifold fitted due to worn swirl flaps . Inlet manifold costs £800+ so any problems want to be sorted via warranty . Car drives really well now too .
