You maybe need your canister recharged. Go to a garage and they will do it for about 40 quid...

if the buttons not lighting up it suggests theres an electrical fault - have you checked the fuses?

Check the outside temperature, if it's anything like the a/c on a vectra C, the air con compressor wont switch on if it's below about 3 or 4 degrees C iirc, and the light wont come on the switch either.

If the temp is much warmer than that, then it sounds like an electrical prob. My compressor went last year on my mk4 sxi, but the light still worked on the switch i think

sounds like an eletrical fault more tbh. either dead fuse or broken wire.
if the pump is dead which mine did the light would still come on.

When I had my 1995 Calibra (so the same sort of air con system as a Mk3 Astra), the gas was leaking from the condenser. So once the gas fell below a certain level the air con button light would not illuminate, but if I was to drive the car for about 30 mins, the gas that was left in the system would expand enough to enable to system to operate - but not very well.

It cost me £330 to replace the condenser, the dry air receiver and get the system regassed.
