    Apple install

Hi all i'm gonna be fitting a mac mini soon (hopefully in the shelf just below the heater dials if it fits) and a 7" touchscreen. just wondered if I will still require the head unit.

    thanks

Depends if your speakers are running on amps. If they are, and the outputs on the PC are good enough for a car amp then you won't need a headunit.

its gonna be a full ICE install, 2 or 3 mids in the doors, 2 extra subs, 8" subs in foot wells (if I can squeeze them in) but all will be run from amps.

oh and some more speakers in the roof lining

The best bet for a decent sounding pc/mac install would be a decent external sound card, As you will be limited to the amount of channels you could run.

I would reccomend a decent 5.1 or 7.1 channel external soundcard.
An external eq/ line driver like a audiocontroll DQT
Then run the outputs from the eq unit to the amps.

Make sure the phono outputs are driven by a line driver as the voltage from the mac will be too low

I'll just add to the above; the mini's sound outputs are really poor quality. You'd be best to get a decent external soundcard (M-Audio or the like).

I'm looking at doing something similar in the future and will be keeping my headunit for steering wheel control and also just radio when I don't want to boot the PC. I plan to make an interface between my Alpine KCA-420i iPod interface and PC. Because my steering wheel can control my iPod, this will mean that I can control the PC. I think some have done it before but I can't find much in the way of code.
