Could be your heat shield over the manifold.

pop the bonnet and have a good listen,

It could be the heatshield or it could be the water pump......

but at least they're both in completely different places so you should be able to hear where its coming from.

u know this sounds stupid but have you opened your airbox recently? When i changed my panel filter i forgot to do up the clips when i got sidetracked. Put down the bonnet and drove away. It was rattling like mad and i thought it was water pump or something, but turned out just to be this :P

How thorough were u at looking?

Did you remove the timing belt cover and attach a probe to the water pump or are u just assuming its the WP cos it came from that area?

Im not saying it isnt the WP but it may be something simple like the aux drive belt tensioner which can rattle its tits off.

If you remove the alternator belt u can at least eliminate this part then you know it is (or at least could very well be) the water pump!

catch it in time before it all goes wrong and its still should cost nothing more than £180 fitted - that includes brand new Genuine GM cambelt kit, water pump and 2 hours labour at a local garage - source the parts ur self - piece of piss - well it would be if i knew what model, engine, year it was!
