    Question 2.2 oils service advice??

hi all, ive been looking through the threads trying to find out whats best for my astra, but everyone that has asked advice has got 1.6 or 1.8s. now mine is the 2.2 and ive heard 3 different grades of oil can be used.

ive been on the castrol website and this is what it recommends . . .

the cars only done 45k if this changes owt. also is there any difference between 75w-80 and 75w-85 gearbox oils? opieoils has it all on 1page so is it ok to use either?

    cheers!

Weblink doesn't work mate, It just asks for your reg plate. So not sure if you were looking for engine or gearbox oil on there.

But if your looking for engine oil you want 10w-40, and may as well get Vauxhall oil instead of the Castrol stuff. Sign up on here as a full member, then you get trade club and 5ltrs of oil is about £9, but 3 bottles and get the 4 free if you want to change it on a regular basis

so the 10w-40 is best then?? ive also heard 5-30 is ok? also is castrol any different to the gm spec stuff i know castrol have this magnatec stuff, but will it make any real difference, or is it just a bit of a gimmic.

and is that "smx-s" gearbox oil ok? that brings up the 75w-80 and 75w-85 page on opieoils.co.uk. both ok to use in my 'box?

why is all this oil businees so complicated!

No doubt the Castrol stuff will be a bit better, but the Vauxhall oil will be more than adequate. Not sure how much the Castrol costs either but bet its not £9 for 5ltrs

I've never changed gear-box oil before so can't help you on that

castrol edge 0w30 is utter shite (my opinion of course!!!!) Magnetec is even worse so step away!!!

stick with what Dave suggested above - u cant go wrong with Vxl 10w40 semi synth

even better if u get trade club discount - £8 for 5ltr aint bad at all

I personally use Royal Purple 10w40 as I get trade price from a local supplier but I hear their gearbox fluid is highly recommended too so may be worth considering

    can be got on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Royal-Purple-Synchromax-Gear-Oil_W0QQitemZ330309816984QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car s_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_E T?hash=item330309816984&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkp arms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

I plan to put it in my ZLET sometime soon

well i went to halfrauds today and they said castrol edge is £45 in a 4l, so id have to get a 1l bottle too!. ive registered on here for membership, but it hasnt activated yet so i dont think im eligable for the discount, although i will call by vauxhall and see if i can wing it tomorrow. as for the gearbox oil, im still unsure if its ok to use either, but vauxhall should know when i pop down tomorrow.

You may struggle to get the discount TBH, or they will knock some off but not all of it.

Once your membership is active you will get access to the members forum and all the needed details are in there

if u really wanted castrol edge then get down to costco - or find sum1 that does have access - altho its utter crap at protecting ur engine its definitely cheap there!

Even if u cant get trade at Vxl this time - even the retail price of approx £18 still aint too bad in all honesty
