    04plate 1600 8V to a 1800 16v

    hi folks

i have a 04 plate astra 1600 ls 8v and to cut to the chase i thing the engine is shite. its under powered and riddled with sensors.

my mate had a 95 plate astra sport 1800 16v which seemed quick and reliable also economical is it advisable to do a swap for the above lump?

if so what needs changing? i.e fuel pump harness gearbox drive shafts any specialist work required? im tempted to buy a lump with ecu and engine loom what else will i need???

Im by no means an expert, but, from what ive heard with VX Engine conversion, its easier to stick a bigger 8v lump in there, more work needed with a 16v conversion... thats pretty much the limit of my knowledge of it

the 1.8 from the mk3 was big block as opposed to your small block 8v

it was also cable throttle as opposed to your electronic throttle on ur 8v

youd probs need another mk4 donor car to take other bits n bobs from so in all honesty id sell up and buy summit bigger as the cost of doin all the work would outweigh the cost of having a ready build (reliable) one as opposed to a 10yr old engine...

totally upto u of course - as u know i had an ever more underpowered 1.6 8v in mine and now have a turbo but i had the donor car side by side and every single thing was transferred over - youd have to do pretty much the same but then the donor is a different mk so youd probs need bits n bobs from another car!

if u defo wanna do a transplant then id get a simlar small block 1.8 - ideally the Z18XE from the 2000-2004 mk4 and you should only need engine, box, ECU etc.... id transfer 5 stud hubs and bigger brakes over too - also abs if u dont have it and whatever else u can strip

youd ideally want a salvage donor but in all honesty i see it as a bit of a moneypit and with the falling prices of cars at present maybe getting a different car with more power would be the best bet

the thing with my car is it was left to me by my grandad before he passed away so im not entriely comfortable with letting it go even though i was looking at vectra c's today with a bit more power. thats why id thought of going down the transplant road!

if i were to go down that road i already have a.b.s but i would be looking to up the brakes and do the 5 stud conversion. all i want really is a bit more power and more reliability the 1600 is emulsifying quite a lot i know the 1600 8v engine does do that due to heavy condensation but the egr is playing up theres an exhaust blow at the front end that i still cant find the cause had it up in the air the other day checked the full system and im yet to find the cause of this raspy noise.

but all in all its a bit boring when running late and ya kicking its head in all the way to work and puntos and saxos make you look like ur on a sunday shopping trip to the garden centre lol

i need to weigh up the options lol a crashed damaged arse end shunted sxi or something is what i need to find then or bite the bullet n buy the 05 veccy c 1.9 derv lol

    The C20XE is the 2.0 16v Redtop - 150bhp

Moving to a 1.8 from a 1.6 (even though it's 16v) is probably a majorly expensive task in relation to the power gains...a 2L or higher would be great though, probably not much difference in cost to do but certainly offers a decent power gain for your money
