    Exhaust question.

Not the normal type of exhaust question, but something that has been sort of been bugging me and i suppose i want to know.

I have a straight through centre section with a 4" backbox (yes i know 4" is a bit chavvy, but it was cheap and i cant afford anything else until a few months. And with the standard backbox it sounded terrible) I still have the standard cat on though. Of course it is quite loud but when im slowing down or changing down a gear it does tend to pop quite a bit, now sometime when i back off the throttle it pops quite loud, almost like a backfire.

So, 2 questions really, 1 being curious is, what actually causes it to do this? Unburnt fuel i take it? Or so ive been told.
And the 2nd question is, is this doing any type of damage at all?

I think its release of back pressure m8 & dont think its anything 2 worry about, most larger/after market exhausts on various vehicles do it .

perfectly normal on aftermarket exhausts. Standard exhausts will pop but with the restriction and silencers its not enough to be heard normally. With an aftermarket job there is muffling so the pops can be heard properly and pop further thru the system with the lower pressure

It wont cause the car any real long term harm so I wouldnt be worried
It would definitely go better with an engine in it

Here's a little movie clip of husbands exhaust on his Vectra. You can not only hear the popping and cracking on the over run, but at 11 secs in you can see it too.

2.5V6 with a 2.5" Miltek system, downpipes and sport cat. It was also done on a cold engine and early morning, hence the smoke/vapour.
