    lack of power?

Hi, I done a full service on my car in the last few weeks but for a while now Ive noticed the lack of power of the engine? I thought maybe a spark plug change might help but its had no affect, can I do anything else to help improve performance? Its a 99 mk4

Is the timing ok and do you have the tools to do a compression test? How does your engine sound generally when ticking over?

To be honest I couldn't tell you about the timing all I know is when its sitting idle its sat at 800rpm. It doesn't sound as good as it used to about a year ago, and no I dont have the tools, what is a compression test?

have you given the engine a service, a compression test is when you test
how much psi is in the cylinder on the compression stroke of your engine,
you need to get the bit of kit which has a psi gauge on then this has a rubber tube and on the end of the rubber tube there is a threaded section and this screws into where the spark plug normally goes,
then when you crank the engine over on the starter the cylinder psi moves the gauge up, but you will need to write down the psi of each cylinder and compare readings and if it is a bit low on the psi readings you need to put some oil though where the spark plugs go and repeat the test,
also when doing cylinder pressure test you need to have the throttle wide open and also disconnect the 3 other ht leads so the engine does not start,
on my engine if the psi readings are more than 28 psi/ 2 bar difference
then this could mean the piston rings are worn and/or the valves could not be sealing as well

    Read what he said!

A compression test measures how much pressure the engine is putting out, this will vary slightly car to car depending on mileage etc. but if it is low this could show that there is damage to the engine causing your general lack of performance, but to be honest this could be anything from a dirty EGR valve, or throttle body, to knackered rings!

Heres a diagram of what he means by compression: stage 2
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:4-Stroke-Engine.gif

Try resetting the ECU, do some searching on the forum under lack of power, or EGR problems, and see what symptoms people are coming back with, theres a shedload of info on this forum, and im the first to make a new post, but try not to be so vague cause the more info you give the more people can help you
