    sound system battery advice???

    hi
im interested in creating a custom install
    firstly a couple questions
    i have a audiobahn a8000t and twin 10" 100 watt subs
i am also going to put in a power cap
i was going to install this on just the standard battary
but i have seen a lot of people are using these yellow top battarys
and as i like to listen to music in the car without the enginge running they
claim that they can maintain the sound system with no drop in performance for 120mins
the question i want to know is how does it work?
as when you turn the engine off how does it not drain the main battary do you have to remove something for it not to drain the main battary?
and how is it connected to the system?
do you need to connect both sides of the battary to the yellow top one?
    has anyone used these?
if so any comments or problems to look out for?
    any aditional advise
    thanks
    rich

Yellow top batteries etc are all deep cycle batteries, have double the standard CCA ( cold cranking amps ) and AH (Ampere hour ) they're also dry sealed units/ Gel batteries and don't rely on acid like standard lead batteries

The way they have it wired mate, its they use a thing called a split relay kit, basically isolates and charges the second battery off the alternator used for ICE/amps only, and with the split relay kit, there is a one way resistor in there that stops the engine ancillaries draining from the second battery

    hope this makes sense

Best budget upgrade is to get a Vectra C diesel battery, 400 DIN CCA and 75AH

More than enough really for your setup

What you will need is a split charge relay. This is used to disconnect the system battery (Yellow top) from the car battery when the engine is off.
Your audio system is then all wired up to the system battery as normal.

Personally, if your considering a second battery, I'd reccommend an Odyssey over the Optima Yellow top any day (Personal experience).
I run an Odyssey PC1700 as my system battery.

sq - how did you secure your second battery and was it easy to do. That diagram looks really complicated. Where did you buy the split charge from

My system battery was installed in a custom made tray that replaced the spare wheel well in my car.
    Battery tray.
    The diagram is fairly simple.
The two positive battery terminals are connected together buy the high current relay. This is switched by the charge control output of the alternator (this is the wire that provides a voltage signal to turn off the battery warning light on your dash clocks. It can be easily found in the engine bay wiring).
This only turns on the relay to charge the system battery when the engine & alternator are running. When the engine/alternator is stopped the relay switches off & isolates the system battery from the car battery, thus preventing the car battery from being discharged.
    Alternative diagram.

The relay I'm using is a PAC80, but I can't find anywhere in the UK currently listing it.

Next best thing I can suggest would be the R100R or R120R relay from www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu LINK

Do a google search for Odyssey Batteries, then price up a few different suppliers. They're not cheap or lightweight, but are very good. A lot of the big SPL cars are using them nowadays.
If possible, change your alternator for a heavier output one. I changed mine from a 100A to a 140A one, though you can get them custom made up to 200A.

Don't know what it's like to do an alternator on the Z20LET, as my car is a 2.0 DTi.
