Do cat back exhausts add power?

In your expereince or opinion, does adding a Cat Back exhaust system to a car, in my case a MK4 gsi, add power.

What? A decent one will especially on the turbo engines.

Catback + airbox mods shoved my teeny Z16XE from 98bhp/113ftlbs OEM figures to 117bhp/131ftlbs on a recent rolling road session....

I same size section as standard is used you should at least get an increase in torque.

My car felt a lot better with my cat back system. Standard back boxes hold back the car the most.

The centre silencer is very restrictive too...I think that's why at the RR day, people with the same engine as me but with the OEM centre section saw less top end bhp and less torque.

sports cat backs do not add power but release the power you already have but is being wasted. Image going for a run with a really thick tissue over your mouth, you would soon get hot and have difficulty breathing, now remove the tissue and run again. Heat drops and it is easier to breathe. You will still have the same power just be able to use it easier

Yes it does, the standard exhaust is very restrictive, especially the center section.Cat back system usually have less baffles in the center box or no center box atall. Also the diameter of the exhaust tubing is usually wider allowing more & faster air flow .
