    wouldnt start cold, now overheats!!

Hi. Have a 1.9 Turbo diesel estate. Car struggled to start from cold so changed glow plugs and relay. still had problem starting so took it to a recommended garage. they said it was compression, kept the car for a week and "re-shimmed inlet valve lifters to give correct clearance, fit 4 new valve/tappet shims(in situe)"?. ...Now the car starts fine from cold but overheats after about 5 minutes of running. It never did this before but the garage saying it not related to the work they did...
Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on....
Feedback gratefully recieved as it now starting to really frustrate

Make sure you have the correct solution of antifreeze, try bleeding the water system through you may have an airlock in the system. Are you loosing water, if you are look for white christline deposits around all of the hoses. Other possibilities for water loss are water pump seals and head gasket failure specially since you have increased compression. You could also suspect the thermostat may have opening problems or the garage has set the valve clearance incorrectly.
