A turbo charger is a very good invention because it uses back pressure to power the induction fan. The other less successful idea is to use stirling engine to convert heat to kinetic add a little more power to the wheels.
Better yet. Wouldn't be better to put a steam engine on the exhaust pipe. An exhaust pipe produces hot gasses the stuff that a steam engine needs. I don't think it would be a silly idea to reduce the size of the petrol engine and increase the size of the steam engine so you could have steam/petrol hybred.
