    battery problems

the battery went flat on my 53 plate 1.7 cdti van over night so i assumed it was knackered and bought a new one the next day. when i fitted it the van started no problem but the power steering has stopped working and now the battery light is on the dash? is this an alternator problem? any advise would be greatly appreciated!
