    Gear changing speed (Efficient driving)

    Ladies
I would like to know the gear change at the ideal speed to acquire efficient driving. All Astras are different so gear changes would be at different speeds.

    Ladies? Hmmm....

When to change gear for efficiency depends on each situation - I'd change gear up a hill differently to changing gear on a nice flat road. Changing too early when going up hill will use more fuel than getting the rpm higher then changing up...

Play with the car a bit, you'll learn how it behaves and how to make the most of it for fun and/or efficiency

i change gears acording to my rev, and the situation.

on an uphill i change at a higher rev and vice versa on a downhill

on a flat i keep it around 2500-3000rpm

That won't be any good for a petrol engine, mine would struggle in 4th at 25, 5th would kill it. I'd still be in 2nd thinking about 3rd maybe but then you would be off boost which is no fun

i tend to go through the box changing up at about about 3k revs... seems acceptable and my car doesnt seem to mind it.. jus tend to keep it in 3rd/4th going down hill to use the engine braking... no fuel used at all then

imo.. if u want to be fuel effiecent.. find loads of hills to go down... =S

For a petrol engine i always think changing between 1900 to around 2500 is effiecient, depending on the gear. Lower gears can be changed up earlier usually.

However getting the car in 5th at 25 or 30 is just going to cost you more petrol and do more damage to your engine. You would be putting a lot of load on the engine at those speeds.

But you still need to get to the top of the hill in the first place!!
