You'll get a better idea poking round BMW forums mate. You'll get a lot of people on here that just want to slag stuff off without having ever owned one

Had a few BM's myself. On the whole good cars, and currently taking a massive hit so some good bargains out there. They do wear the miles well. paint is pretty good and interior material quality is generally superb. Most interiors look quite good even at 100k miles. Bearings, bushes etc last ages.
Don't be put off by the auto boxes until you've tried one. Individuals hold bit of a premium and if you can find the right one, you could be in for a very high spec car. Alpina's hold a mssive premium!

Its the engines I worry about due to long service intervals. Dealer service prices are quite high so they use 'long life' oil and stretch services to ~ every 20k.

The good thing with em is there is a massive used, aftermarket and tuning parts market out there so you're never short of options. Plenty of specialists as well.

You're never really gonna go too far wrong with a BM, just for feck sake make sure you buy one thats quick enough otherwise I guarantee you'll regret it later on

iv only had any experiance with the old ones e30 model mainly iv had the 318is 1.8 16valve which fly for a 1.8 the same engine was fitted to the later e36 model as well and i had 2.5 12valve and these engines sound awesome and go quite well and they are bulletproof a lot of the later 24v engines suffer from cracked heads and blocks vanos cam issues and the coating on the bores.but if you have one of the later models youve got to think of service and maintanance costs and anything before 2000 will probably have some sort of rust issue

I've had my E46 330ci since 55k on the clock. It ticked over 100k last week (will be worth nothing now!!) and overall has probably cost me less to run than all my other cars put together. I cant think of anything it has needed other than the common minor stuff (bushes etc). The engine is bullet proof and the interior etc has aged remarkably well.

My service intervals are every 12k I beleive, but you can get it serviced whenever you want to be on the safer side.

I think 2003 (facelifted) fully loaded E46 sport coupes are a stonking buy right now. You can haggle a great price.

BMW;s, Volvo;s, Merc;s etc. allhandle high mileage with ease. over 100k on one of these is basically nothing. As Legoman said even the interiors wear well.

When I was looking for my 8 series I saw a couple of others up for sale with over 200k on the clock one of them with full BMW service history!

I get mine serviced at a local BMW specialist and although for an 840 the servicing interval is about every 10k, it doesn't cost a fortune: similar prices to what I used to pay to get my astra done at Vauxhall.

Mine has currently covered 65k (I got it with 59k on the clock) and my total spending on it so far has been roughly 2k. But then I was aware that it needed work doing when I got it and paid about 2k less than the going rate at the time.

Auto box is very good (sport mode is even more fun) although sometimes I find myself wanting something with a manual gearbox that you can really throw: hopefully if Hannah gets a Cooper S that craving should be satisfied though!

My cousins have also had a couple of E30 325s which are pretty good fun.

Im looking at buying a m3 (older one) at the min nice cars, but the interiors I have found on bmws, I have found havnt worn as well as I would expect imo.

But solid cars and not as expensive to run and service as first thought. But smaller cc models are piss poor slow.

A mate had a 528 with 240k on the clock and it ran as sweetly as the proverbial nut. For me it has to be a 'proper' beemer though, fully loaded, leather, straight six. Although the latest 4cyl diesels are also superb.
