Hello guys this is my first thread and a small worry. I worry a lot about potentially expensive things.
When I bought my car from previous owner, I checked everything but the oil cap; it had some mayonnaise on it. My first thought is that this could be a potential gasket failure. The major cause is overheating I thought that I would have a test drive to see if it would overheat. I didn’t expect it to overheat before I tried; perhaps I looked at the temperature gage while I was test driving it. Even after an oil change it appears to be still new small layer there, though it does seem to be happening less the last time I checked it.
The thermostat/ temperate gage appears to be working as expected. The car runs cold, often below the first marking; however, it does go up to 10:30 c’clock occasionally when sitting in traffic.
One check. There appeared to be no oil mixed with the coolant, thought the coolant level was very high. One possibility was too much coolant created pressure that leaked into oil.
Some on Net say that mayonnaise on oil cap is a common problem with 1.6 8v engines. Others say short journeys, where the engine doesn’t get a chance to worm up and gentle driving. Obsessive gentle driving is not suppose to be good for an modern engine; possible because it is has the same side effect as extensive engine idling.
I am keeping an eye on the coolant level to see if it drops and the running of the engine runs; which starts perfect every time and the engine idle steadily and quietly and revs so nice you think,’ That’s one healthy sounding rev”
