    Confused Mk3 1.4 Won’t Fire

    Mk3 1.4 Won’t Start

    Hi, I’ve got problems!

    My L reg 1.4 SOHC C14NZ engine mk3 Astra won’t start.

The battery is good and I’m getting a spark at the spark plugs (is there a way of telling if the spark is strong enough?).

I can try turning the car over for 1 min , which it does fine, and the engine will not fire at all until I turn the key to give up and then it will fire for ½ a second and then stop.

One moring in 4 it will turn over, fire after 5 secs and run all day. If I get it going it runs ok.

Also I’ve got no experience with fuel injection. Is there a way for me to get some petrol into the cylinders to see if the problem is fuel starvation like I used to do with carbs?

Any help with diagnosis would be great,

    It’s cold walking!

    Cheers,

    Will

Just squirt some carb cleaner or easy start into the air cleaner inlet

if it starts up on the easy start then, this tells you that nothing is at fault

with the ignition system or the vehicles immobiliser system

then you can now concentrate on the vehicles fuel system.

    Thanks for the help.

Regarding the immobiliser, I don't think it has one. The key is not one of the fat ones and really looks like it's got nothing in it. I've looked in the Haynes book and no immobilizer is mentioned. How can i tell if i have one?

Could the coolant temperature sensor be broken?
If that wasn’t working apparently it wouldn’t fire some cold mornings, but the orange engine fault light doesn’t come on so it can’t be that?

I’ll try the easy start next time it won’t fire and get back to you

    cheers

the coolant temp sensor(cts) is the choke for cold starts and it is on the inlet manifold left hand side as you look at the car from the front my astra c14nz did not have a immobilizer,
    the problem with
easy start is the engine gets addicted to it then it will not start with out it
