Astra van 1998 1.7dtl couple of problems

Hello all im still reltively new on here and on vauxhalls aswell as diesels.

So far i have managed to split the head and break all the rockers due to no timing marks and no specialist tools.

Now thats all fixed and timing all setup its been having trouble starting especially when its cold so ive changed the glow plug which has made it a little better but still not brilliant.

So I thought i'd have a look at sorting out the diesel timing but the haynes manual i have for diesels only goes upto 96 and mines 98 and has a different way to set the TDC.
Anybody else done this before who could give me some pointers??

Also i have a knocking noise which i thought was the cam running dry (thats what led to me breaking stuff), but it wasnt that and ive had a second hand head from the scrappy put on with different tappets and still no joy.Im thinking bottom end to be honest but yet again if anybody else has had this problem and got any tips to fix it they would be greatly appriciated.

    Cheers Rich

P.S sorry for the longish thread
