    1.8 Petrol Vs 1.9CDTI

    Afternoon all

Yes its that old chesnut again, diesel or petrol.
My dilemma is is whether or not to get a 1.8 petrol or a 1.9CDTI

I wont be doing a huge amount of mileage (less than 10k a year) but i want something that can pull and also needs to be tuneable i.e. ability to add a few more horses.

The way i see it -

Petrol (1.8 16v) - Easy to do engine mods, not necesarily great gains in bhp. Not great MPG

Diesel (1.9 CDTI) - Already has quite a high bhp and alot of torque, Better MPG.

But i'm not sure what sort of engine mods i can do to the diesel , I've heard about the DTUK box (???) how much does this cost and what sort of engine gains to you get from it?
And what other mods can i do to the diesel engine?

What would you get when considering the above?

The car would be a Mk5 SRi xp

    Cheers all

diesel would piss all over the petrol.... untill top end, and then maybe the 1.8 would stand a lil chance...

Diesel can be tuned to 200hp pretty easily without too much cost.

You'd need to spend a fair bit of cash to get the petrol anywhere near that figure.

The petrol will just sound better if that makes any difference to you

    My votes for the diesel.

EDIT : All the above depends on whether you are talking about the 150hp diesel.

The petrol should cost a bit less than the diesel but as said the diesel can be tuned to 200bhp very easy. What sort of budget to you have?

Between £6k and £9k ideally as i'd be getting it on finance from a Network Q (second hand obviously)

I think it would have to be the 150bhp version

N/A petrol engines cost too much to tune and the gains aint worth the cost.

1.9CDTi, no arguements from me! 150bhp, oodles of torque, and even just adding a tuning box should see excellent improvements on that!

What about getting the 2.0t? Should be able to get one in your budget and is going to be better than both of those engines, you wont get as good MPG but since your not doing that many miles would that bother you?

    One word.......Insurance!!

As i'm only 19 its going to be my biggest problem. I have started searching round for quotes but am getting silly results atm, im going to give Adrian flux ago as it would suit my modification plans, but previous experience has told me they're quite expensive for my age range.

Do many places do military discount?
