Sometimes you wish you didnt start

Ever started one of those jobs you wish you had just paid someone else to do

Yesterday I started on the job of changing my Punto clutch. Everyone I spoke to (And on the net) said how easy it is to do.
So with that in mind I set out taking it apart in 1 degree temperatures. Got most of it stripped out and all that was left was to release the 2 drive shafts. This is where things got difficult.
As mine is a diesel it has different shafts. It has a 2 piece drivers side shaft with a bracket attached to the block. Try as I might I couldn't get to all the bolts to undo the bracket as everything seemed to be in the way. Spent about 2 hours trying and it was starting to get late so packed up for the day. Spent a few hours on the net and it seems no one has reported on removing the shaft on a diesel apart from 1 person that said he thought he saw the garage had left it in place and took the box off the input shaft and drive shaft at the same time.

Day 2 on 'its easy to do' was spent in 0 degree temperatures undoing the remaining bolts and brackets etc ready to pull the box off. So lowered the engine and box down to see the swing arm mount was just in the way so needed to pull the engine forward a bit. Pulled the box off (Which was heavier than I thought .

Great I can now replace the disintegrated release bearing and change the clutch. But no........... The release bearing fits on the arm but is smaller and the friction and pressure plates are both smaller too. Not a problem I will just phone the parts place and get the right one. Oh hang on a minute its bank holiday tomorrow so they shut an hour ago and not open tomorrow either. So that means wait till Friday when they are open and order the right one (As they don't hold them in stock) so if I am lucky I might get it Saturday so I can get it back together Saturday/Sunday ready to drive it to work Monday (If the weather stays dry)

OR I could have paid the £350 and had a garage fit it

Its been frustrating but taken it in my stride.

Just one of those things. Never done one before on this car so its a steep learning curve. Will know how to do it next time if anyone ask's.

Its like most things isn't it, nothing is ever simple. But if you ever have to do it again you'll be a lot quicker with it im sure.

Worth mentioning, we've had fun & games with certain fiat clutches, the one the factors supply is listed to fit, but as you have found doesn't, have then tried different listings etc to no avail.
We have had to get genuine kits for a quite few punto's / cinqy's & seicento's ( spelling ) as fiat seem to fit weird and wonderfull g/boxes / clutches at factory.
You may find the next one they give you fits, but if not go genuine

I now what you mean, get half way through the job and then wish you had just payed the gargae to do the job. But then you get the satisfaction at the end that you have done it your self.

My clutch has just started slipping in the combo so i have got to get that done. Not going to attempt that myself.
