Ever started one of those jobs you wish you had just paid someone else to do
Yesterday I started on the job of changing my Punto clutch. Everyone I spoke to (And on the net) said how easy it is to do.
So with that in mind I set out taking it apart in 1 degree temperatures. Got most of it stripped out and all that was left was to release the 2 drive shafts. This is where things got difficult.
As mine is a diesel it has different shafts. It has a 2 piece drivers side shaft with a bracket attached to the block. Try as I might I couldn't get to all the bolts to undo the bracket as everything seemed to be in the way. Spent about 2 hours trying and it was starting to get late so packed up for the day. Spent a few hours on the net and it seems no one has reported on removing the shaft on a diesel apart from 1 person that said he thought he saw the garage had left it in place and took the box off the input shaft and drive shaft at the same time.
Day 2 on 'its easy to do' was spent in 0 degree temperatures undoing the remaining bolts and brackets etc ready to pull the box off. So lowered the engine and box down to see the swing arm mount was just in the way so needed to pull the engine forward a bit. Pulled the box off (Which was heavier than I thought .
Great I can now replace the disintegrated release bearing and change the clutch. But no........... The release bearing fits on the arm but is smaller and the friction and pressure plates are both smaller too. Not a problem I will just phone the parts place and get the right one. Oh hang on a minute its bank holiday tomorrow so they shut an hour ago and not open tomorrow either. So that means wait till Friday when they are open and order the right one (As they don't hold them in stock) so if I am lucky I might get it Saturday so I can get it back together Saturday/Sunday ready to drive it to work Monday (If the weather stays dry)
OR I could have paid the £350 and had a garage fit it
