Question AMD Quad 1.8Ghz Vs Intel Dual 2.2Ghz

Hi Guys, i'm back on my IT help forum ha ha

I am taking my dad to the shops tomorrow to find him a new PC (inc monitor). with a budget of £400.

He uses it for storing and viewing photos from his 10MP camera, ebay, internet, email, word, excel.

    He currently has:
    Intel Pentium 3 1.01GHz
    512MB RAM
    40GB Hard Drive
    15" 4:3

so you can imagine we need to upgrade and to upgrade from that won't be hard lol.

I had a good google around and the best could find was Dell Vostro

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor 2.20GHz
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
    250GB Hard Drive
    + a 19" widescreen from Misco
    total £365 delivered.

but he doesnt want to buy online, so having a look in the PC world sale and the closest they can do is

    AMD Phenom X4 9150e quad-core 1.8Ghz
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
    250GB Hard Drive
    19" Widescreen
    £399

I had a read of a good post on here comparing AMD and Intel, then a google on the difference between quad and dual too. plus my knowledge gained from the RI christmas lectures on channel 5 (continues tonight lol)

Seems the AMD is going to be noisier and slower, and if he's not going to be gaming he may not see the advantages of quad core.

I will keep and eye on this post tonight, then we will hopefully be buying in the morning so your opinions or advice would be really appreciated.

    Cheers
    Ian

Although it's a pentium it will generate more heat running at 2.2 and there for need more cooling and probably be noisier.

The Phenom will out perform the Dual-core but sadly not a Quad-core Intel (at the moment).

Obviously full spec would be easier to help with .... and what OS your hoping to run on it .... i.e. 2GB running vista might be a chore ....
