55W HID's not legal for road use?

    hiya,

Was looking at HID kits on ebay and I asked a seller if the kit he was selling was 35W or 55W. He came back saying that it was 35W although he does have 55W but he then commented that 55W kits are not approved for road use and are illegal?

Can anyone confirm or shoot this down?

    Thanks

After an argument here and a bit more resurch there only illegal if the lens/light fitting arn't correctly rated for them.
I'm sure many members here will point out that they have never been stoped or failed an MOT for having the incorrect len's.

No. None of the retrofit 55W HID bulbs are road legal. Nore are any of the 35W. The E approval just means that the bulb passes a few standards. That is amusing there genuine but most are not. Under ECE regulations the headlight it self is tested and coded for the bulbs its permitted to use. In so all retrofit HID bulbs are illegal. You have to get a full bulb and headlight set to legal fit HIDs. But even then you are limited to 35W HID bulbs if you wish to stay legal. This is the UK governments fact sheet on the subject http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps this is the easy to read massively cut down version to make it nice and easy to understand.
