    Battery Light

    Greetings to all!

Switched on my 1996 1.4 Astra this evening, to find the battery light came on after about a minute, and after driving down my street, a slightly strange noise started, a slight whirring noise. I then drove it straight home again to avoid getting stuck anywhere unfamiliar!

My dad (the previous owner) disagrees with me about the noise, but I know ALL the noises it makes, and I know that it just doesn't sound right!

The only other thing is that I have a side light out, although I'm not sure whether this could have anything to do with the battery light being on.

The battery itself is only 18 months old now, so perhaps a problem with the alternator?

    thanks, Jonathan

If the batt light is on, i believe it means its deffo not charging which would point me in the direction 0f the alternator too. Could be the bearings but for the cost involved and hassle, its prob best to replace the whole unit.

When I rev the engine the battery light gets brighter... does this signify that it's charging the battery? Or just that it's getting worse?

I have had exactly the same kind of thing happen to me this morning, I was travelling, and all of a sudden, a whirr started, that got higher in pitch the faster I went, although the battery light wasn't on all the time, it flashed for a few seconds quiet erratically, is this the same thing do you think?

Hmmm.. some strange (but good) developments, checked the belt on the alternator which seems ok and is turning ok, replaced the side light bulb which was broken, switched on the engine and revved it a few times, and Bingo!

The battery light has gone off, and after driving around for 10-15 mins doesn't appear to be coming back on.

Any ideas what the cause could have possibly been?
