Noob alert - info for future purchase - 1.8i SRi 16v or 1.9 CDTi 16v

Ok, im not good with cars but ive decided on a astra for budget and insurance issues, and just because they look darn sexy

Ive set myself a budget of 7-8k, for this I could get the 1.8i SRi or I could get the 1.9 CDTi! I cant go any higher in engine size as Im a college student and cant get insurance.

As far as I can see I dont see why anybody would get the 1.8i SRi. The diesel is faster in acceleration times and has the same top speed. Along with that, its got better fuel economy.

Im not really interested in top speeds, but I am interested in acceleration, hill climbing and fuel ecomony. I do about 150 miles a week to and from college ect... What is the best to go for?

    thanks a bunch

Ok, thanks for the info guys, its great.

As I don't know much about cars I thought there must of been a reason why people got the petrol, but now I know the diesel is better, Thanks.

    astrasxicdti, thanks for that info!

On this astra specs page, it says that the astra is insurance group 12! is that correct as your stating its 15!

heres a car which looks prety nice to me, its on autotrader for 6.5k

What do you guys think? On this exact car direct line will ensure me as a 19 year old for £700 a year.
