    Cool Poor MPG

    Hi all,

Im new here so firstly i would like to say hi all and thanks for taking the time to look!!

I have recently bought a 52 reg astra 1.6i SXI, What kind of MPG should i re getting from this car? I find it is very poor.. im getting around 240-260 to a near full tank... Is this good or bad?

Previously i had a Vw Polo 1.4 TDI PD and i was getting around 54mpg with this.. so owning this is kind of a shock.. Just wondered if maybe i need to old change or something...

    Cheers guys..

The car was last serviced at around 52k i have now 60k on the clock but no inspection light as of yet.

Would a oil change possibily help with mpg?

Yea i drive sensible.. I didnt at first with it as you dont with any new car.. but when i noticed the way it drinks fuel and the money it costs i soon became a light footed driver

    You'll certainly notice a difference if you're coming from a 1.4tdci.

I'd expect no more than 40mpg from the 1.6 sxi

If it had a proper service at 52,000 then it should have had oil, filters possibly spark plugs too.

The service interval on the engine is 20,000/12 months whichever comes first so it isn't due again yet unless it's been 12 months since it had the last service. Would be worth checking which service it had and what was done (cambelt for reference is every 40,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes soonest - this is essential to do, otherwise they're prone to snapping and killing your engine!). If it didn't have the full oil, plugs, oil and air filter then changing these may help.

MPG should be well over 300 for normal driving, though it'll dip if you only do short town type driving.

If the last service did everything mentioned then it could be something else at fault - a few sensors can give dodgy readings but not put the engine management light on the dash - let us know about the last service and I'm assuming the EML isn't on?

I've never had more than 300 miles to a tank, but then I only really do very short journeys about town. I'm sure I'd get more on a run.

Driving style plays a big part in fuel consumption.
